In 2002, Douglas County placed the future of the animal shelter in the hands of Saving Grace, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization, whose sole purpose is to care for abandoned and neglected animals. The current animal shelter was built in the 1950’s by volunteers from the Humane Society. The shelter has seen more than 24,700 animals pass through its doors since 2002. Since 2003, Saving Grace has seen an increase of more than 87%, and this year will prove to see that number increase yet again. As the human population of Douglas County grows, so goes the number of animals served by Saving Grace Pet Adoption Center. Each of us is passionate about caring for and helping to reduce the unwanted numbers of adoptable animals in on County. Thanks to the generosity of our neighbors, Saving Grace has begun an on-site spay and neuter clinic so that every animal that is adopted from our shelter is first altered before leaving our facility. Successfully controlling the unwanted pet population will take several years, unfortunately. Therefore, we are now in the process of increasing the services we provide, like community education and pet care training. We know these offerings will significantly improve the Pet + People relationships for our animals and curtail the unplanned pet population in the county. We need more volunteers and staff to address these and other challenges, but in our current buildings we can’t make these plans a reality. Please help us help the animals by donating to our new building campaign.
