Socializing Your New Pet
Introducing a new dog or cat into the household is really no different than introducing a new baby (human). There are many resources available to help you and your new pet settle into a co-existence that is healthy and loving. In addition to many articles that are available on the Internet, check your local library, or telephone directory for animal behavior specialists...your veterinarian, no doubt, would have some tips for you too. A Few Tips 1) If you already have an animal or two (or more!) in the home, then you'll want to introduce the new pet slowly, by showing your other family members that the newcomer is not intruding, but actually someone you're happy to have with you.
2) At all times, ensure the safety of yourself, your new pet, and your existing pets. If your existing family members (dogs) are accustomed to being kenneled, then they view being in the kennel as a safe environment. Place them in their kennel, and the new dog in his kennel, and allow the relationship to develop naturally. 3) Cat lovers will sometimes find that a new (cat) addition isn't welcomed by an existing cat. If your home is large enough to accommodate two cats who do not care for one another, then most likely, each will stay out of the other's path (much like family members). However, if you find you are breaking up a cat fight or two, then please call a professional as soon as possible for assistance and guidance.
